Automatic load-based hybrid battery discharger with integrated thermal management. It avoids light-bulb loads that create an uneven load, require repeated bulb changes, and can damage a hybrid battery.

Connect and discharge

Connect the Pro Automatic Discharger to the hybrid battery through the existing Maxx Volts charger wiring harness already installed in your vehicle. The harness must be equipped with discharge capability.

How the automatic discharge process works

Automatic current taper: The Pro Automatic Discharger automatically and continuously tapers the discharge current throughout the entire discharge cycle as the battery voltage declines. By the end of the cycle, the discharge current is very low and the discharge proceeds slowly.

User-controlled stopping point: The unit does not select a final discharge voltage or automatically disconnect at a predetermined depth of discharge. The user determines how deeply to discharge the battery and stops the process by disconnecting the Pro Automatic Discharger from the vehicle wiring harness.

Required Maxx Volts charger system

You must already own a compatible Maxx Volts charger system or purchase one with the Pro Automatic Discharger. The discharger uses the Maxx Volts charger wiring harness to connect to and discharge the hybrid battery.

Reconditioning process

When you reach the discharge level you selected, disconnect the discharger. Reconnect the Maxx Volts charging system to the wiring harness and complete the charging procedure again.

The charge-and-discharge process can be repeated one to five times to top- and bottom-balance the battery pack, reduce memory effect, and break up nickel-metal hydride crystalline dendrites that can affect capacity, internal resistance, and heat within the pack.

This is a severe-duty service tool intended as the next step when charging alone does not produce adequate results. It is the final reconditioning step before stick or module replacement.

Service life and warranty

Discharger systems have a finite cycle life, similar to brake pads, and eventually require service. Service frequency depends on the number of discharge cycles, including commercial, fleet, or multiple-vehicle use.

  • The standard warranty is six months for non-consumable electronic components.
  • Load-cell replacement and other normal wear service may involve a service charge.
  • If the unit requires manufacturer service, mail it to Maxx Volts. There are no user-serviceable internal parts.
  • Manufacturer service preserves warranty handling, quality-control testing, serial-number documentation, and service records.

Battery condition limitation

Chargers and dischargers cannot repair physically or chemically damaged sticks or modules, including modules leaking electrolyte. Damaged sticks or modules must be replaced before reconditioning an otherwise serviceable battery pack.

Charger compatibility

  • EL-1 Series chargers: discharge ready.
  • Premium Series ordered with the discharger: discharge ready when both are ordered together.
  • Existing Premium Series charger: tell us when ordering the discharger so the required discharge link can be included for the existing wiring harness.

Battery-pack limits

Pro Automatic Discharger: compatible with hybrid battery packs up to 28 modules and 245 VDC.

Larger 34- to 40-module packs from 240 to 350 VDC must use the Extreme Pro Automatic Discharger. Examples include Camry, HS250h, first-generation Prius, Tahoe, Silverado, Escalade, Lexus GS450h and LS600h, Highlander, RX400h, and RX450h.
